The Power of the Push Up

Can you do push ups? Not too long ago, I couldn't. Well, maybe I could do one -if I was on my knees. But since starting Krav Maga a few months ago, my fitness has improved. Now I can do about 16 "real" push ups. My current goal is 20.

Both the Munchkins can do proper push-ups. They can both do more than I. Even the Little One. Miss Munchkin can crank out 30 in 1 minute. She's my hero.

The New York Times had this to say about the push-up. Read the article to see why it's an important skill. Then drop and give me 20.

I'm up to 40 as of this morning. Yay for Krav Maga! And I say this as a former noodle-armed-one...

Hey, that's impressive! Would you care to pass along any hints? I can't seem to get past 20. Ugh. :P

OK, I learned this from an ex-Navy guy in my class who's now a trainer. Do as many pushups as you can (20 for now), wait 15 minutes, then do 20 more (or as many as you can). Or do them whenever you think about it during the day. Try 20 in the morning and 20 in the evening. This builds up your muscles a lot faster that just doing them once a day.

I should state that my 40 pushups is really 26 pushups, a minute break, and 14 pushups. And I started with 1 pushup every 15 minutes, or whenever I thought of it through the day. 1 became 2 became 4 became... well, you get the idea.

Good luck! Your front fallbreak will thank you. And you'll be a lot less likely to get a pad punched into your face, too. :)

Thanks - that's great advice. I'll start working on that! My arms (and my face) will be glad I did. :)
